TAP OR DIE, tap dancing movie

TAP OR DIE, a feature-length documentary, is an intimate look at the history of an art form that's transforming itself from nostalgia to current sensation. Master hoofer Derick Grant, determined to revive tap dance or die trying, is struggling to bring his hip, rousing show 'Imagine Tap' to Broadway. The community is abuzz and auditions are in progress. But the pitfalls of commerce, a legacy of racism, and misguided notions that this cutting-edge dance is a relic from the big band era have kept the show in the wings. Unique for its access and insights, TAP OR DIE weaves together arresting archival and contemporary performance footage of Grant and tap masters from around the world. Featuring an original score by Bessie Award winner and STOMP sensation Nicholas Young and interviews with Jacob’s Pillow Executive and Artistic Director Ella Baff, New York Times dance critic Brian Seibert, Bessie winner Michelle Dorrance, Emmy Award winner Jason Samuels Smith, the ‘Ella Fitzgerald of Tap’  Dianne Walker, Barcelona Tap's Guillem Alonso, Sevilla's flamenco star Juan de Juan, France's 'First Lady of Swing' Sarah Petronio, and other living legends of tap dance, TAP OR DIE is an ode to the genre—past, present, and future. Throw down the wood, Broadway!
